The Trustees are pleased to report a grant award to York Women's Counselling Service
York Women’s Counselling Service is a charity based in York that provides one-to-one counselling for women experiencing emotional and mental health difficulties arising from current or past stress or trauma. Its mission is to support women in need, offering help when required for as long as necessary, regardless of their financial circumstances.
The service provides a confidential and safe environment where women can explore their problems and concerns. Run by women for women, it aims to create an atmosphere of trust and support to foster personal growth and healing. Counselling is available for both short-term and longer-term needs, with sessions typically lasting 15-20 weeks, reviewed every six sessions to ensure they meet individual requirements.
The counsellors and psychotherapists at York Women’s Counselling Service are trained professionals, members of recognised organisations such as the British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy, and bring expertise in various therapeutic methods. These include Dramatherapy, Art Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing, and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy. Many also have specialised experience in areas such as eating disorders, domestic abuse, child sexual abuse, and pre- and post-natal depression.
The charity is dedicated to inclusivity, welcoming all women, including transgender women, and ensuring equal access to services. If the service cannot meet an individual's specific needs, it signposts clients to other suitable organisations for support. York Women’s Counselling Service operates on a donation basis, asking clients to contribute what they can afford. For those unable to pay, the charity ensures access through its Vulnerable Women’s Fund, enabling 20% of clients to receive support completely free of charge.
Through its compassionate and professional services, York Women’s Counselling Service empowers women in York to overcome emotional challenges, build resilience, and improve mental well-being, making a positive impact on the local community.
